Elizabeth Roth, "like the david"

(paragraph from Jacksonville Folio Weekly Magazine's "best of Jax" issue - 10-21-03)

This spot is usually reserved for some hard-driving Southern rock outfit or a slick funk band, but this year Folio readers had different ideas. Introspective and mellow, St Augustine singer/songwriter Elizabeth Roth takes top honors with her latest release "like the david". With production help from Jim Devito, Roth weaves simple acoustic tunes that disarm the listener. Alternately ambivalent and hopeful, "like the david" calls to mind the work of Harry Chapin or of Joni Mitchell in her more pensive moments. When Roth enlists her pals to help pen the tunes, the pace picks up a bit. For instance, Stephen Bifani's "Get It Right" moves at a steady clip while Mike Harts' "My Baby Keeps His Cool" is a straight ahead blues romp. But Roth is at her best when she's plucking and strumming with minimal instrumental support. The drone of a cello or the sparse back-beat of a kick and snare groove is all she needs to get her point across. For more info on "like the david" check out www.elizabethroth.com
