With the release of her latest CD, "like the david," Elizabeth Roth has been busy establishing herself as a commodity. She received the CD of the Year award at the Showcase of America ceremony held recently in Daytona, and was awarded Best New CD by Folio Weekly readers in the 2003 Best of Jax poll. Though performing up to five times a week in Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Daytona, Roth took time to meet wiuth Folio Weekly about her latest recording.

FOLIO WEEKLY: Before this CD, your live performances consisted of mostly cover songs. What are some of your favorites to perform?
ELIZABETH ROTH: I've done about 450 different songs - everything from acoustic folk like Joni Mitchell to classic rock. It's hard to pick a favorite. I love learning different songs, so I could say my favorites are new ones that I perform.

FW: How has your perspective changed since you began performing original music?
ER: Well, I've been performing for about 15 years now, so it's really cool to get recognition for my own music, which is very personal to me. But I have always felt a connection with the cover songs that I perform, so it's not a complete change to play music that I relate to. How I feel when performing cover songs is like how actors feel about their scripts. They don't write the script, but they can connect with it and act as if it was their own creation.

FW: Where did the title "like the david" originate?
ER: It was from a remark that producer Jim Devito made on how the creation of my CD would be, "like the David." He was speaking of the statue "David" by Michealangelo that started from a flawed piece of marble ... but was later made a masterpiece due to its unique impurities. This relates to my CD because I went to Devito saying that my songs were unconventional and had stylistic differences, when really it was the differences in the structure and styles of the songs that made the CD come together so well.

FW: What is your life like away from stage and studio?
ER: I was just invited to join the music faculty at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (in St. Augustine). It's a group of blind junior high and high school students in a band called "Outta Sight".

FW: You jam with your son on occasion. What do you learn from the interaction?
ER: Well, tonight (he) was teaching me a Metallica song, and we played some Led Zeppelin. I am also learning some Nirvana songs. It's neat because he is learning some of the same songs that I did when I was his age, and it creates a stronger bond between us through shared interests of music.

"like the david" is available at elizabethroth.com or at Chip's Music in Jacksonville and Stewarts Music store in St Augustine. Roth performs from 1:00-4:30 p.m. every Saturday at Tradewinds in St Augustine.
