Local Jukebox: Elizabeth Roth, flaws and all

by Julia Calgiano      Special to the Compass

For folk musician Elizabeth Roth, perfection is a creation formed through flaws. Her debut original release, "like the david" is an example of her "flawed" work.

"Flaws make something into what it really is," says Roth.

The inspiration for the name of the album came after a conversation Roth had with co-producer Jim Devito. He compared her recordings to Michelangelo's statue of David, after she admitted her work had "some flaws".

"Michelangelo created the statue of David from a piece of marble that another artist had already begun working on," says Roth. "But what he wanted was still created, because he had a vision of what was there."

Roth and Michelangelo share the same mindset when it comes to their respected works of art, the musician said.

"Everything that you need is already there," says Roth. "You just need to find it."

Roth has been playing for 27 years, but didn't begin writing her own until 15 years ago.

"People started coming up to me at shows and telling me they would really like to hear something I had written," says Roth. "That's when I really started thinking about writing my own songs."

"Like the David," a two -year project, was completed in April 2003. The CD contains 11 tracks; seven of them are Roth's original pieces and four are covers by local musicians and friends.

The album was Roth's first experience working with a band, and forced her to make a lot of "creative decisions," including how and where to add certain instruments into her songs.

"I had to come up with my own vision of what I wanted," says Roth. "But the individual flavor of each song dictated where to go with the instrumentation."

Roth doesn't want to predict where her musical talents will take her. She simply wants to see what happens.

"If I could make a career through music," says Roth, "I would consider that an accomplishment."
