If you've been in the St. Augustine (Florida, USA) area in the past decade,
you've probably heard Elizabeth Roth, and thus have been waiting for this disc
for a LONG time. If she's new to you, you'll be just as pleased as her long-time
fans with her debut CD, "like the david".
"like the david" is a work of great scope, moving effortlessly from style to
style - elements of folk, jazz, rock, funk, classical, & more - while still
retaining that unique stamp of Elizabeth's personality. From the opening somber
strains of "The Fire" and the mournful "Plato's Regret" to up-beat numbers like
"My Baby Keeps His Cool" and "Get It Right", both of which feature a rockin'
horn section, Elizabeth displays a mature, urbane, & elegant approach to
composition that features touching melodies, surprising modulations, and
wonderful lyrics that will, over the course of this CD, pull on every emotion.
While comparisons to other "Adult Contemporary" artists (Norah Jones, Carly Simon, etc.) are inevitable, Roth stands on her own as a remarkable talent.
Instrumentally, those who have watched her play know what an amazing guitarists she is, and her seemless stylistic segues (from fingerstyle to rapid-strummed funk lines) leave no doubt even in the most critical minds. This exceptionalism is couched in song throughout "like the david" with no open displays of her virtuosity. Roth plays with taste, sophistication, and delicate restraint that leaves you wanting more. Every song is delivered with near-perfect execution and Elizabeth's uber-soulful voice.
One feature of this CD is how quickly Elizabeth switches moods - sometimes from song to song, sometimes within one song. While this may tend to work against most artists, it works on "like the david" by sheer force of Elizabeth's presence. From the groovy "Get It Right" to the regretful "Watching as We Die" to the catchy "Useless" to the almost angry "Walk in My Shoes", the moods turn right & left without warning, but the ride is not one you'll soon forget.
Sorry, folks, there is no standout song (or songs) at which to point - the
entire CD is marvelous and worth your immediate attention. To order, as well as
